About Indherred Lutheran Church

Indherred Lutheran Church was founded in 1870, making it one of the earliest Lutheran congregations in Pope County. Organized by Norwegian settlers under the leadership of Rev. P. S. Reque, the congregation began worship in simple surroundings that reflected the pioneer conditions of the time. An early church building was constructed in 1873, and a cemetery was established nearby, anchoring Indherred as both a spiritual and communal center for local families.
As the congregation grew, a new and larger church was built in 1896 on the same rural site. This structure, crowned with a tall steeple, remains the congregation’s home today. Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Indherred experienced steady growth and stability, shaped especially by long-serving pastors such as Rev. Gerhard O. Forde, who ministered to the congregation for over four decades.
Throughout the 20th century, the church adapted to changing times while preserving its traditions. Facility improvements included stained-glass windows and the addition of a parish hall for education and fellowship. Like many Lutheran congregations, Indherred’s denominational affiliation evolved through national church mergers, ultimately becoming part of the ELCA.
In recent years, Indherred Lutheran has embraced collaborative ministry through shared parish arrangements with neighboring congregations. Today, it remains a close-knit rural church known for its strong sense of community, faithful worship, and long-standing commitment to serving Christ in the Starbuck area.
