About Immanuel Lutheran Church

Immanuel Lutheran Church traces its beginnings to the early 1870s, when Norwegian settlers north of Starbuck gathered for worship in homes and farms. Formal organization occurred in 1872, guided by Rev. P. S. Reque, as the congregation sought to establish a permanent Lutheran presence in the area. These early years were marked by steady growth and deep commitment to faith amid the challenges of frontier life.

 

The congregation constructed its first church building in 1880, followed by a larger second building in 1896 as membership expanded. Tragedy struck in 1918 when lightning destroyed the church by fire, but the congregation responded with resilience, rebuilding a new sanctuary that same year. This structure became the center of congregational life for much of the 20th century.

 

Immanuel Lutheran was shaped by long-term pastoral leadership, most notably the Forde family, whose decades of ministry provided continuity and stability. Throughout the 20th century, the church supported education, mission work, and fellowship while adapting worship practices and facilities to meet changing needs.

 

Today, Immanuel Lutheran Church is an ELCA congregation actively engaged in shared ministry with neighboring churches through the CrossWind Lutheran Parish. With more than 150 years of history, Immanuel continues to serve Starbuck and the surrounding rural community through worship, learning, and faithful service rooted in its enduring Lutheran heritage.
